Forms & Elements: Echo
An echo is a faint reminiscence of a moment which refuses to fade away immediately.
If you call out, you will receive an answer. However, what you hear is not new but your own words, refracted off a surface. For a second, it seems as though the place itself has a voice – a slightly different one, softer and more distant. There is a certain fascination about hearing your own voice return as an echo – even if an objective observer knows it is merely sound waves reflecting off a hard surface.
To experience the impact of an echo, you need wide open spaces, such as in the mountains. In this breathtaking natural environment, the original sounds resonate distinctly after ricocheting off the cliff faces. Everything is replicated, no matter whether it is spoken, sung, clapped, whistled or drummed. The past transitions into the present. A memory, both atmospheric and resonant. Every sound leaves traces which linger a little longer, reverberating.
