Forms & Elements: Living spaces
Living spaces – a term that sounds both familiar and open to interpretation.
We all spend our time in some space or other: in our homes, on the move outside them, as part of a community or alone. But what turns a space into a living space? It is not merely down to its function or the shelter it offers; it is the way we feel about being there. A living space can be quiet, a refuge or sanctuary which offers us security. It can be full of life, characterised by movement, encounters and exchange. It can be an intersection, a corridor, a square, a station which connects us. Living spaces evolve where architecture builds not only walls, but also opens up potential and perspectives.
Perhaps the beauty of living spaces is precisely because they do not define us, but open us up to new perceptions and perspectives. They keep us grounded and at the same time allow us freedom; they offer ease and familiarity yet arouse curiosity.
In this issue, we focus on this diversity. We showcase projects where the living spaces have been designed in very different ways. Places where every minute counts, stories unfold and life takes shape. You are invited to spend time in these spaces and perhaps gain something from the experience yourself.
