Forms & Elements: Contrasts
Architecture thrives on contrasts.
Juxtaposition, contraries and opposition. At interfaces where materials converge, where colours clash and yet complement each other, where rough meets smooth, where interiors merge with exteriors and shut intersects with open – atmosphere is created. Character. Identity.
Contrasts generate friction. Juxtaposing opposites makes both sides appear more extreme. The modern house next to the old shed. The austere cube made of exposed concrete surrounded by an overgrown garden. Matt timber next to glistening steel. But opposites do not have to be mutually exclusive. They enter into a relationship which can be very productive. Interaction between contrasts can also create harmony.
In this issue, we are exploring a range of contrasts: extreme contrasts and subtle ones, visual and conceptual, textural and geometric. The projects selected have one thing in common: they are all residential buildings. However, they are very dissimilar and their response to the question of what makes a home is never the same.
